Now I know substrates (i.e. compost) may not be the most exciting thing in the world to everyone, but with our Grow Your Own Skincare challenge this year I’m keen to delve deep into the world of organic growing, to find out exactly what it means when a product is certified by the Soil Association as organic. And where better to start than with the most essential of items to be able to grow any plant organically (apart from organic seed of course!).

Country File covers food labelling

Country File covers food labelling

Those of you watching Country File last night would have seen the great piece on food labelling in relation to animal welfare. John Craven Investigates examined the differences between three food labels: the Red Tractor, Freedom Food and the Soil Association. As more of us become increasingly aware of where our food comes from and how it is produced, these issues can play as big a role in our purchase decisions as price. But unless the differences between the labels are clear, they do little to help us make informed choices about what we buy.

The Grow Your Own Challenge

Soil Association certified producers have a hugely positive impact on the environment and our native flora and fauna, so this year we’ll be bringing you all you need to know about organic farming methods and how they impact on the skin care products you buy. We’ll be visiting some of our producers to see what techniques they are using and why, and how independent certification by the Soil Association guarantees you that the products you buy have been grown, processed and packaged in a sustainable way.

2012 Year of the Herbs - Chamomile, calendula and lavender

How fantastic - 2012 is also Year of the Herbs!

How fantastic – not only have the National Garden Bureau (NGB) named 2012 the year of the geraniums (rose scented geraniums are commonly found in skin care products), but they have also designated 2012 Year of the Herbs, which fits perfectly with our goal to get as many of you as possible to have a go at growing your own skin care ingredients – many of which can be designated as herbs.

This year’s choice – the geranium – is certainly versatile and is already a common sight for many but not all are aware of the fantastically wide variety of scented-leaved geraniums available.

Although slightly chilly on Saturday, the community garden in Kingston was blessed with clear bright blue skies – perfect light to take a step back and imagine how the garden can be transformed in the coming months. Kingston’s CRED (Cambridge Road Estate Diggers) community garden had a great first year in 2011 with lots of yummy veg for the community to enjoy and the plans for this year are sure to see it develop further as a fantastic resource for the community.
