My current favourite is Frankincense. It encourages deep breathing which in turn aids circulation and concentration. It has the most beautiful, complex fragrance that is a bit woody with a gentle lemony back note.

February has been a very exciting month for us here at Saffron Organic with the launch of our very first Organic Skin Care courses. Run by our founder Fiona as part of Kingston University’s Go Green Week, two one-hour lunch time courses were held on the 10th and 16th. We are pleased to say we managed to raise some money for People & Planet along the way, which will go towards helping to encourage schools, universities and students to become greener. We meet some lovely people with an active interest in organic skin care, had some great feedback and are looking forward to running out next courses.

Beauty is on the inside... what's inside your moisturiser?!
Soil Association certified producers have a hugely positive impact on the environment and our native flora and fauna, so this year we’ll be bringing you all you need to know about organic farming methods and how they impact on the skin care products you buy. We’ll be visiting some of our producers to see what techniques they are using and why, and how independent certification by the Soil Association guarantees you that the products you buy have been grown, processed and packaged in a sustainable way.

How fantastic – not only have the National Garden Bureau (NGB) named 2012 the year of the geraniums (rose scented geraniums are commonly found in skin care products), but they have also designated 2012 Year of the Herbs, which fits perfectly with our goal to get as many of you as possible to have a go at growing your own skin care ingredients – many of which can be designated as herbs.

This year’s choice – the geranium – is certainly versatile and is already a common sight for many but not all are aware of the fantastically wide variety of scented-leaved geraniums available.

Although slightly chilly on Saturday, the community garden in Kingston was blessed with clear bright blue skies – perfect light to take a step back and imagine how the garden can be transformed in the coming months. Kingston’s CRED (Cambridge Road Estate Diggers) community garden had a great first year in 2011 with lots of yummy veg for the community to enjoy and the plans for this year are sure to see it develop further as a fantastic resource for the community.

Our Christmas Charity Hamper fundraising this Christmas was in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, a fantastic charity that supports ill children and their families. Thank you very much to those of you who donated and spread the word about our fundraising efforts.

So we’ve all pigged out a bit over the festive period and may have eaten a little more than our fair share of the mince pies, but now that January has arrived far quicker than we would have liked, its time to start the new year.

Pelargoniums (often fondly known as Geraniums) come in all shapes and colours, and most excitedly for me, fragrances. I’m not talking flower fragrances - I’m talking leaves oozing with seductive scent.
